Coaches nominate: QAFL and QAFLW reveal the biggest pests of 2024

From the off field pranks to non-stop talkers, QAFL and QAFLW head coaches have lightheartedly revealed their club’s biggest pests - and not all are players. See which larrikins made the cut.

As the QAFL and QAFLW season approaches its final weeks, it’s time for the head coaches to have their next say in our 2024 ‘coaches nominate.’

Throughout the season we’ve revealed who has stood out from each club, diving into unique topics such as best-one-on-one player, most underrated, craftiest forward and more.

This week we reveal each club’s biggest on or off field pest with each nomination made in good spirits and with love.

QAFL

Aspley, Adrian Pilgrim: “Will O’Dwyer would take that award. You never know what you’re going to get with him or what he’s going to do next.”

Broadbeach, Danny Nolan: “Kwaby Boakye, he won the league medal last year and just gets around the boys and antagonises them. I don’t think anyone knows where he’s going, he turns on a dime and no one knows what he’s gonna do next, even himself. He’s an elite kick.”

Maroochydore, Steve Wildschut: “Tom Holt. He’s a funny individual at the best of times.”

Morningside, Paul Egan: “Flyn ‘Chicken’ O’Toole. He organises our fines, sorts out the videos and it’s always pretty fun.”

Noosa, Matthew Leuenberger: “Let’s go with Shane Hutchinson, our assistant coach.”

Labrador, Clint Watts: “Tom Simpson, he’s the leader of the fines each week, nothing gets past Simmo. He’s good on the lip so he’s probably top of the pile.”

Redland Victoria Point, Phil Carse: “Winger Billy Johnson, he’s a little bit out there, and Campbell Aston, they’re both loud blokes who like to get their opinion out there.”

Sherwood, Brett McEvoy: “The blokes that tell you the week before they go away. Xavier Knight, he is literally just a pest, he rocked up to training with Crocs and blonde hair, he started up our Magpie TV channel, likes to niggle at blokes. He has these little trips away every so often which gets frustrating, he’s a little bit of a larrikin, but a good kid.”

Surfers Paradise, Matt Lappin: “Ben Woodburn, he brings energy but can be a bit of a pest.”

Wilston Grange, Brent Moloney: “Ethan Rosin would be ours. Biggest pest by far through his funny antics, he runs our spin the wheel, helps with functions and different bits and pieces at the club that people always enjoy.”

Mt Gravatt, Hamish Mitchell: “There’s so many but let's say our biggest is Kayden Corboy.”

Palm Beach Currumbin, David Armitage: “Tom Hickey, he’ll hate that but he is a pest, just a larrikin, he stirs the pot.”

QAFLW

Aspley Hornets, Luke Glacken: “Probably go with Emma McNaughton. She’s flown into the senior squad for the back half of the season. Her footy skills speak for themself but she’s definitely a pest around the training sessions and with the girls. We try to avoid eye-contact when we come into the quarter and halftime huddles.”

Wilston Grange, Phil Tonkin: “Charlize Anderson. An absolute pest, asks the same questions to everyone.”

Coorparoo Kings, Rory Lake: “Jenae Govan has been in a couple of little scuffles, she has a martial arts background, I wouldn’t want to mess with her, she’s pretty confident in that space. I like when she does that, other girls walk taller knowing they’re on her side.”

Bond University, Andy Lovell: “Mia Salisbury is always playing tricks on me, always tapping me on the left shoulder, then sneaking around to the right, she’s pretty cheeky.”

Maroochydore, Leigh Redpath: “Marlee Marshall. That’s an easy one, she’s always doing something stupid and sometimes I have to hide my laugh.”

Southport Sharks, Peter Doherty: “I could name six of them, I don’t think I’ll name that player they might come hard at me.”

UQ, Ross Clayfield: “Jessi Henning, I have had reports from opposition players about our fullback just randomly talking to them, she’s got a bit going on and just likes to talk which can confuse her opponents, she’s a character and a very good footballer. She’s lovely but sometimes the opposition get freaked out when she talks all game.”

Yeronga, Stuart MacKay: “Alana Lowery I’d say.”
