NO, you have not been imagining it. Petrol is cheap on the Sunshine Coast.

The RACQ's latest fuel report has shown that the Sunshine Coast is once again the cheapest place in the state to buy fuel.

The average price of 146.9 cents a litre for unleaded petrol in August on the Coast was the cheapest in the state.

Coast motorists are doing even better at the moment thanks to an extended cycle period.

The average price on the Coast yesterday was even lower at 134.9 and it has been about 30 days since a price rise.

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said motorists should make the most of the current price.

"Usually, the petrol price cycle only lasts a couple of weeks so it is really weird," she said.

"We don't really know when prices are going to rise but the advice to motorists is to fill up.

"If you see anything under $1.35, that's nearly wholesale price."

Ms Smith said the Coast was earning a reputation as one of the cheapest areas to fill up the tank.

"The Sunshine Coast has great level of competition, along with a high number of independents which continues to keep the ULP prices down."

The Coast had held the crown for the cheapest fuel in the state until May, when Warwick took the title.

The Coast snatched it back last month with an average price 3.9 cents a litre cheaper than Gympie, 4.3 cents less than Hervey Bay, and 1.7 cents less than Brisbane.

Although Gympie's ULP was more expensive than the Coast, it had the cheapest diesel in the state at an average price of 151.5 cents a litre.

Ms Smith said motorists should make the most of prices when they were down.

"Motorists are really getting a good deal at the moment." She said they should shop around before filling up, preferably at the bottom of the fuel cycle. She said it also paid to keep topping up while prices were down.

"Motorist should avoid waiting until they're on empty and they're forced to fill up at the nearest servo," she said. "They can save themselves hundreds of dollars each year by doing their research and finding the cheapest price on fuel."
