The South Burnett man accused of killing Kingaroy dad, Colin Watson (pictured), in a hit-and-run incident last year had his case heard in court.

Colin Watson (pictured) was walking to get milk for coffee when we he was allegedly struck and killed by a black Mercedes-Benz in Kingaroy in the early hours of Tuesday, September 3.

A South Burnett man who allegedly killed a local on his way to buy milk for his family in an early morning hit-and-run has returned to court.

Colin Watson was walking along First Ave in Kingaroy about 5am on September 3 last year when he was allegedly struck by a black Mercedes-Benz, which police later located at an address in Taabinga.

Jade Hugh Cherry, 31, was charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death and leaving the scene of incident without obtaining help

and one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle with two prior convictions.

Mr Cherry, who did not appear in court on Monday, May 12 as he is currently incarcerated in Maryborough Correctional Centre, was represented by his lawyer, Mandy Reid.

Ms Reid asked the court for an adjournment to give his legal team time to apply for a grant for legal aid to obtain an independent forensic crash report.

Mr Watson, 36, was walking with another man when he was hit, and there were reportedly multiple eyewitnesses questioned by police.

The father of two died at the scene and was remembered by his family as a “good bloke” with a “big heart”.

Locals reportedly “expressed shocked” following the crash, and South Burnett Mayor Kathy Duff called Mr Watson’s death an “absolute tragedy”.

No pleas have been entered.

The matter is due back in Kingaroy District Court on July 21 for a mention.
