The Commonwealth Bank has confirmed plans to reopen the Kingaroy branch in the coming weeks, after the building was damaged and the branch closed due to water damage from the region’s spate of ferocious storms and torrential rain earlier this year.
The branch closed its doors and removed the ATM after repeated and severe storms in January left a trail of carnage across the region, forcing customers to travel to the next closest branch in Murgon, almost 46km away.
Reportedly, there was no sign posted on the premises stating when the branch would reopen, which has led to speculation on social media that it might never reopen.
The closure of bank branches in regional Australia has become an increasing issue for many rural Australians.
While some commenters were adamant the bank would never reopen, others said they had seen workmen coming in and out of the site in recent days.
A Commonwealth Bank spokesperson said the information they had “suggests the team are rebuilding the internal branch space, with the aim to have both the branch and ATM back up and running for customers within the next few weeks”.
The Murgon branch has temporarily extended its trading hours by three hours a day until the Kingaroy bank reopens.
