Two charged after allegedly stolen car drama

A young Queensland mother who was hit by an allegedly stolen car with a baby on board has given an incredible account of the drama as the baby’s mum described screaming after thieves who had driven off with her little girl.

Queensland Police said on Thursday they had charged a 24-year-old woman and a 36-year-old Mount Morgan man after the alleged theft of a vehicle from a shopping centre carpark in Yeppoon on Wednesday.

Police took the man into custody after finding the allegedly stolen grey Nissan Patrol at Bungundarra.

The 24-year-old Cobraball woman was charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, abduction of a child, driving without a licence.

The 36-year-old Mount Morgan man was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle. Both the man and the woman were denied bail and are due to appear in court on Thursday morning at the Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

A young mum who was struck by the car with a baby on board when it tried to leave a carpark said she suffered fractured ribs in the drama.

Phoebe Halson, 21, had just arrived at Yeppoon Central in Central Queensland to pick up a few things before heading to the zoo.

But the moment she got out of her vehicle, she knew something was very wrong.

Ms Halson heard tyres screeching and then heard a woman screaming.

“We ran over. We thought the baby had actually been hit by a car because we saw her pram's capsule laying on the ground.

"We thought the baby had been hit and we were like 'oh my god'.

"But she's screaming and she goes 'no my baby, my baby, my baby, my baby – she took my baby'.

The baby’s 23-year-old mum said she was screaming as she slung to the car being driven away.

“I screamed ’my baby, my baby’s in that car.’”

”She eventually came back, wouldn’t stop. However, she said kept saying ’get the baby out, get the baby out’.”

”It was just horrific. My heart sank knowing not knowing if I was gonna get my baby back.”

”It’s so hard to believe that it’d happen to you. Like, you always see it in, like, movies, but you don’t ever think that it’s going to happen to you. So I was just, my main focus was trying to get my baby back,” she told 7 News

Ms Halson said they were trying to comfort the young mum.

"So we were standing in the middle of the loading bay where we were trying to console this mother and then the car's come flying back around and drove through the exitway down the ramp going 50km at least.

"Me and another lady stood there yelling at her to stop, there was a baby in the car.

"I had my son in my arms as well, he's nearly 2.

‘IM SCREAMING AT THEM TO STOP’

"So this car's flying at us, I'm screaming at them to stop.’’

"We've finally realised the car is not going to stop, so I've actually not had enough time to get out of the way.

"I've turned my back and the car's hit me on the side and I have three cracked ribs."

Ms Halson was also left with a stomach tear and fluid around her spleen and had to be treated in hospital and was discharged on Wednesday afternoon.

She said another woman and a teen were also struck by the car as it went past.

"My son was completely okay thankfully," she said. "I shielded his whole body with my own." Ms Halson said the mum was "completely hysterical" when the car drove off with her baby.

TERRIFYING MOMENT CAR WITH BUB ON BOARD ALLEGEDLY STOLEN

CCTV footage has revealed the terrifying moment a mother desperately tried to open the drivers’ side door of her car, as a brazen thief allegedly jumped in it and drove away with her four-month-old baby in the back seat.

The young child was sitting in a baby seat in the grey Nissan Patrol while her mum packed the boot with groceries in the click and collect lane in the undercover car park at Yeppoon Central on Wednesday when the opportunistic car thief allegedly struck.

Reports on social media from witnesses said people were screaming and chasing after the vehicle as the alleged thief, a young woman, drove off. “I was there and (it) was very scary,” one person commented.

“What a brave person who got the baby out.

“And the driver was teasing the owners who were chasing and yelling to stop.

“The car would slow down then when the owners got close (it) would take off.”

Police have confirmed the shocking incident unfolded about 12.10pm and at 5.30pm advised a man and woman allegedly involved in the incident were assisting police with enquiries.

CCTV footage released by police shows the vehicle parked in the Woolworths click and collect lane with the boot open.

A woman, with a red bucket hat on, can be seen walking up to the vehicle and opening the passenger door before entering, climbing over to the driver’s seat and driving off.

Items from the boot are sent flying and the mother can be seen running after the vehicle, desperately trying to open the driver’s side door.

The CCTV footage also shows the alleged female thief entering and walking through the popular shopping centre earlier with a male person.

Police further alleged the woman who was driving the vehicle returned to the scene and demanded the mother take the child out of the car, and as the child was removed, the woman drove away in the Nissan Patrol and hit two people in the car park.

A 16-year-old male and a 39-year-old female received injuries to their legs and were taken to Yeppoon Hospital in an ambulance.

The baby was not physically harmed in the ordeal.

Anyone with information, dashcam or CCTV of the grey Nissan Patrol is urged to contact police.

The incident follows other brazen crimes across Yeppoon on Wednesday morning with a 42 year-old woman threatened at a knifepoint at 4.30am when she was attending her gym, as well as a break-in at Intersport Yeppoon.
