Sourcing, buying and installing the new rowing course for the Fitzroy River will take about seven months, the Rockhampton Regional Council has heard.
Councillors voted unanimously on Tuesday to replace the course, which was damaged, with parts of it washed downstream after significant rainfall in August last year.
It cost the city the chance to host the 2024 state schools championships, which were set to attract 800 competitors and about 3000 visitors and provide an economic boon to the region.
The replacement course is estimated to cost $150,000, with $20,000 of Council’s sponsorship funds reallocated from the 2025 Regatta towards the new course.
The council plans to install a like-for-like, eight-lane buoyed course in line with the original design.
A council officer told councillors the procurement process would be 26 to 30 weeks and despite all attempts to have it in time for the 2025 regatta season, it was possible that might not happen.
“That risk is real that with the decision today to support this year’s regattas, there is a chance through that tender process we might fall short,” he said.
“We’re optimistic; there is scope to deliver it, but there is that risk there.
“To put a number and date around that, we’d be looking at around August 18 to have it in the water, ready to go.”
Senator Matt Canavan welcomed the decision, acknowledging the council and the local rowing community for working towards this solution.
“It’s fantastic news to see that our local rowers will soon be able to get back on the water,” he said.
“Rowing is a massive tourism drawcard for our region that has put Rockhampton on the national map time and time again.
“Whether it’s hundreds of school students and thousands of parents travelling to Rockhampton for a state school championship, or the Australian Olympic rowing team training on our mighty Fitzroy River, our rowing course is an asset certainly worth protecting.”
