Skipper Simon Green produced an inspirational performance as St Brendan’s steamrolled Rockhampton Grammar in the last round of the Dolphins Cup regular season.

The competition’s classy lock scored a hat-trick in the team’s 36-12 win at Rugby Park on Tuesday night, ensuring they finished first in the schoolboys rugby league competition.

Equally as impressive was second rower Harrison Hill, whose barnstorming runs set the platform for his team’s masterful attack.

The duo replicated the form that earned them selection in the Confraternity Carnival merit team last month, and Hill the Player of the Carnival.

The victors made a dynamic start, scoring three tries in the opening 20 minutes to race to an 18-point lead.

Grammar got one back in the 22nd minute but any hope of a revival was snuffed out as Green caught the defence unaware, darting over for his second to give Brendan’s a 24-6 lead at the break.

Green seemingly had a hand in everything and not surprisingly, crossed for his third try just seven minutes into the second half.

Prop Carter Ford sealed the win, the recipient of a brilliant weaving run from halfway by hooker Braelan Marsh.

Grammar scored a late consolation try to narrow the final margin to 24 points but they had no answer for Brendan’s, who made a big statement on their way to the competition’s semi-finals.

The kicking game of halfback Tyler Melrose was also a highlight as he finished with a perfect record, converting all six of his team’s tries.

St Brendan’s also took the honours in the Dolphins Challenge, reversing an early 4-nil deficit to register a 16-point win.

It looked like anyone’s game at the break after both teams scored two tries apiece, and Brendan’s lead 12-10 going into the sheds.

But the Yeppoon outfit broke the game open in the second stanza, scoring 14 unanswered points to register a 26-10 win.

PREVIEW

Carter Ford is set to explode back onto the footy scene as St Brendan’s look to round out the regular season of the Dolphins Cup with a third victory.

The freakish forward’s Confraternity Carnival was cut short by a thigh injury, but he is now well rested and ready to rip in against Rockhampton Grammar at 6.30pm on Tuesday.

The Cup challenge promises plenty, with both teams having the same record of two wins and a loss.

St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto Ford was a ‘big-in’ for his team, which was intent on success after a somewhat disappointing performance at Confro.

“We’re really focused on getting the job done in this competition and, hopefully, we can play our best footy,” he said.

“The biggest thing is we need to put together a more complete performance.

“At Confro, we weren’t at our best and probably played as patchy as I’ve seen in a little while.

“But when we do put it together, we’ve had some really good halves where teams couldn’t go with us.

“We have to do that consistently for longer periods of time.”

Minto said Ford had a solid hitout on Thursday and was ‘firing and ready to go’.

He would start in the front row alongside Jake Oberhardt, with the middle forwards set to have a big say in the result.

Skipper and lock Simon Green and second rower Harrison Hill, who were both named in the Confro honorary team, would be looking to back up their performances from Townsville.

Minto said this year’s Dolphins Cup was one of the closest yet, and Grammar would have their tails up after locking in a semis berth with a gutsy win over Emmaus last week.

He said they had a big, mobile forward pack, and dangermen that included centre Cooper Broadhurst and halfback Callum Denman, whose kicking game posed a threat.

“It’s the last game before semis and with Grammar at home and playing with confidence, it’s going to be a tough one,” he said.

“But we’re good to go and we’ll benefit from having nearly everyone back together fit and healthy.”
