Shiloh Chambers rental at Zilzie targeted and flooded

A Central Queensland man has been left scratching his head after returning to his rental property to find footprints on his carpet and taps on full blast, causing thousands of dollars in flood damage. Here’s what happened.

When Shiloh Chambers returned to pick up the last of his things from his rental property, he walked into a flooded house after someone broke in and left the laundry tap running.

When Shiloh Chambers was moving out from his rental property in Zilzie on the Capricorn Coast, he never expected to walk in to the mess he discovered at the weekend.

But on a trip to get the last of his belongings from the property on Sunday, and two days before his bond clean, he saw water coming from the garage door and walked into a smelly odour.

He said because he had been unwell he hadn’t been at the property for a few days.

“I came out early only to see water coming from under the shed door,” he said.

“The water had soaked into the carpet and into the walls in the house, the laundry taps were on full blast.”

Mr Chambers said he couldn’t find a broken entry point, but did see footprints on the carpet inside the house and a kitchen tap had also been left on.

“Personally, going by the smell, I’d say it happened about two nights prior,” he said.

“I had just got everything out and there was a handful of gear I was going back for, it happened two days before the bond clean and they’ve gone through and completely wrecked the place.

“It’s gone through the walls, I reckon there would be at least $3000 in damage.”

Mr Chambers said he had heard of break-ins happening in the area.

“In my opinion, I think it could have been youth, it’s (youth crime) been a bit of problem, they’ve noticed the place was empty decided to go in and run a bit of a muck,” he said.

“What’s weird is I couldn’t find an entry point, but I could see footprints on the carpet.”

Fortunately, most of Mr Chambers’ belongings were already out of the house, but it’s now put him in a “difficult position”.

The water damaged the walls and also left a smelly odour.

“It’s definitely put me in very bad spot, on top of the rental market being a shambles at the moment, this comes along and happens,” he said.

He said he recommended people started installing security cameras.

“They’re very easy to set up and you get notifications of anything happening that they pick up,” he said.

Mr Chambers said he had notified police about the incident and was expecting them to go to the property to conduct fingerprinting.
