Zion Ziggy Sean Goltz was only eight years old when he was allegedly murdered by his mother at their home in Rockhampton more than one year ago.
Louwanna Thyra Goltz, 36, is charged with murder over the death of Zion at their Waterloo Street, Berserker residence in July 2022.
Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard an update on Ms Goltz’s case on Wednesday, with defence lawyer Brendan Gimbert advising her matter was before the mental health court.
Mr Gimbert had advised the court Ms Goltz’s case was being referred to the mental health court at the last mention on May 31.
He requested a lengthy adjournment of three months.
Balloons, flowers and stuffed animals were laid on the driveway of the Rockhampton unit complex where Zion was found dead in the days following his alleged murder.
Among the tributes was a handwritten note with the words “To Zion, you were one of my best friends. I will miss you dearly”.
The heartbreaking note was from a friend at Berserker Street State School, where Zion will be missed by many other students and teachers.
Zion was remembered as a beautiful boy who had a bright and bubbly personality who put a smile on many faces.
Neighbours recalled seeing him ride his electric scooter to school and shop workers remembered his friendly nature when he went shopping with his foster mother.
Zion’s father is Timmothy O’Halloran.
It is understood Zion’s death caused heartache within the family.
Zion is of First Nations descent and was known to Child Safety as he had been in foster care for the first seven years of his life.
He was placed back in Ms Goltz’s care about 12 months before his death, reportedly against advice from family members and his carer.
In an objection to bail affidavit from police, it was alleged Ms Goltz turned up on the doorstep of family members in Parkhurst at 1am on July 30, 2022 allegedly “rambling incoherently about spirits and referencing a covered artist’s canvas” she had with her.
According to the court documents, one of the witnesses stated to police Ms Goltz allegedly told her she had been lying down with Zion watching television and a voice told her to kill him “because Child Safety would take him away and she herself would end up in a body bag”.
Police attended the Waterloo Street unit Ms Goltz shared with her son to perform a welfare check about 2.20am on July 30, 2022 and officers found the eight-year-old boy unresponsive.
The court documents state it appeared Zion had died by strangulation and an autopsy would provide further information.
Police alleged Ms Goltz’s mental health had “rapidly declined” in the month before the tragedy “and alarmingly quickly within the last week”.
The court documents state family and witnesses told police they had allegedly heard Ms Goltz yelling incoherently over the past month, particularly when she had been under the influence.
The court documents also state neighbours reported hearing her speaking in an unknown language and screaming “f--- off” over the previous two weeks.
Magistrate Grace Kahlert adjourned Ms Goltz’s matter to December 6.
She has been remanded in custody at Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre.
