Rockhampton police investigate robbery of elderly man in Park Avenue

Rockhampton police are appealing for people with footage to come forward after an elderly man’s car was stolen in the early hours of the morning, and five businesses were targeted by offenders.

Rockhampton police have launched investigations after a crime spree across Rockhampton, which included the robbery of an elderly man in the early hours of Thursday.

The spate of crime began just after midnight and all involved a stolen white Toyota Camry, which is still outstanding.

About 3.15pm there was an attempted break and enter at Glenmore Village before another attempt at an Archer St address a short time later.

There was also an attempted break in at Domino’s Pizza in Allenstown.

About 4.03am Cocobrew on William St was broken into, where a window was smashed and “a large amount” of alcohol was stolen.

There was then an attempted ram-raid at Rosenberg Motorcycles, diagonally across the road, where the offenders tried to use the Camry to break into the business.

The offenders then continued their spree on East St at Subway and Silly Solly’s where windows were smashed in.

About 4.30am in Park Avenue, the 82-year-old man pulled over his car, a white Holden Cruze, in front of the Post Office on Main St where the white Camry, believed to be used in earlier offending, parked behind his vehicle.

The man was approached by a woman who spoke to him briefly before returning to the Camry.

A man then pushed the 82-year-old to the ground from behind, before fleeing in the victim’s car.

The Camry followed the stolen vehicle.

Detectives are also investigating possible links to other incidents on Thursday morning including a suspicious person in Musgrave St at 12.20am and a burglary in Broad Court at 2.30am.

The woman was described as Indigenous in appearance and of slim build, but police do not have a description of the other person.

Detective Acting Inspector of Capricornia Crime Group Luke Peachey described the offending as “absolutely disgusting”.

“He’s very shaken up, he’s out there just doing his thing, posting letters when someone a lot younger and a lot more able bodied has thought what better to take advantage of an 82-year-old, pushing him over and stealing his vehicle,” he said.

“Like everyone in the community we’re outraged by it, it’s disgusting behaviour and rest assured we’ll be saturating Rockhampton, we’ve a very fair idea who is responsible for this, and we’ll be making numerous inquiries to locate this individual and bring him before justice.”

Det Act Insp Peachey said police had been out and about all Thursday doing various investigations.

“Information has been coming in all morning and it’s still coming in, so we’re still trying to piece together what may and may not have been stolen,” he said.

“But we do know the common thread was this stolen Toyota Camry.”

On Thursday morning police took a 15-year-old girl into custody who was helping them with their inquiries.

No charges have yet been laid in relation to any of the incidents.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was in those areas at those times and anyone with relevant CCTV or dashcam footage.

Investigations are ongoing.
