An alleged dangerous driver in custody swore and banged a wall after he was refused bail in a Central Queensland court this week.

Jayden Barnes, 27, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court via video link on Tuesday where he applied for bail.

Mr Barnes is facing charges including dangerous operation of a vehicle, disqualified driving, obstructing police and failing to appear in court.

He was in a show cause situation and solicitor Bianca Wieland made written submissions for him in the bail application.

Police prosecutor Kelvin Boyd objected to bail, saying Mr Barnes was an unacceptable risk of committing further offences and he had previously failed to appear five times since 2023.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan said it was a “fairly strong” Crown case and she spoke about some of the alleged offending including the dangerous operation charge which she said was “serious.”

Ms Buchanan said police had activated lights and sirens after allegedly clocking a vehicle doing 122kmh.

She said the vehicle then allegedly overtook a truck whose driver had to take evasive action as a result.

Ms Buchanan said it was alleged the truck driver pulled over and let the police car pass.

She said it was alleged the vehicle pulled over and police saw Mr Barnes get out of the driver’s side and swap seats with a passenger.

Ms Buchanan said it was alleged Mr Barnes’ driving had endangered other road users.

She said he was an unacceptable risk of committing further offences and bail was refused.

Mr Barnes was visibly upset at the ruling, swearing and getting up off his seat to bang a wall.

He was remanded in custody and his matters were adjourned to February 20.
