A serial thief with expensive taste has narrowly avoided being returned to prison after breaching a suspended sentence for supplying illicit drugs.

Jason Robert Beattie, 46, was re-sentenced in Rockhampton District Court on December 6 after carrying out 19 offences between December 2021 and August 2022 including stealing $17,000 worth of jewellery from Rockhampton and Gympie stores.

Beattie had been sentenced in Rockhampton District Court on July 29, 2021, for one count of supplying methamphetamines.

His offending was discovered in messages between he and an unknown person, where the unknown person asked if Beattie had any meth to which he replied he could sell them 0.1 gram for $250.

Judge Jeff Clarke sentenced the “prolific offender” to 12 months prison, suspended after serving four months and operational for 18 months.

Crown prosecutor Caleb Theunissen said the 19 offences which breached this suspended sentence included 10 stealing offences, along with dishonesty offences, possession of suspected stolen property and receiving tainted property.

He said that offending resulted in a three-month prison term, wholly suspended with an operational period of 12 months.

The property offences included stealing a necklace and a pendant from Angus and Coote in Gympie in December 2021 and a necklace worth $11,000 from Prouds in Stockland Rockhampton in January 2022.

Mr Theunissen told the court Beattie had no outstanding matters other than the breach of the supply sentence.

Defence barrister Sheridan Shaw said her client had been homeless since last year and was couchsurfing between his son’s place and a friend’s place.

She said he claimed he had an application in for Department of Housing accommodation.

Ms Shaw said the father-of-two had attended Lives Lived Well since his release from custody in October.

Judge Clarke said evidence before the court indicated Beattie was not complying with his parole from the magistrate-ordered suspended sentence.

He activated the remaining eight months on the meth supply suspended sentence, to run cumulatively with the magistrate-ordered suspended sentence, and ordered he be released immediately on parole.
