A man on bail accused of stealing more than $17,000 of jewellery from Gympie and Rockhampton jewellery shops allegedly reoffended by stealing a security system worth about $1000.
Jason Robert Beattie, 46, made a bail application in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on August 31 after being charged with two fresh counts of stealing, one of failing to provide identifying particulars to police and one of possessing suspected tainted property.
Mr Beattie is accused of stealing the security system from The Good Guys on August 21 and hundreds of dollars worth of groceries from Woolworths on April 19.
He is also charged with possessing suspected stolen property - a Medicare card
The court heard he had two suspended sentences at the time of both sets of alleged stealing offences.
Defence lawyer Ashley Reynolds said Mr Beattie had struggled with a lengthy methamphetamine addiction which contributed to his stealing offences.
She said his Centrelink benefits had been cut off months ago and he was living with a friend and her four children.
Ms Reynolds said Mr Beattie had a partner who was not employed and money had been tight.
She said he had sought help for his mental health recently which he wanted to follow up with and had an appointment with Lives Lived Well.
Acting magistrate Ron Muirhead said the allegedly stolen groceries were worth about $900.
Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said Mr Beattie was on bail for allegedly stealing items “of extremely high value”. Those items were two pieces of jewellery.
“Both items of jewellery were worth $6000,” Ms Brown said
She said those items were a necklace and a pendant allegedly stolen from Angus and Coote in Gympie in December 2021.
Ms Brown said Mr Beattie was also accused of stealing a necklace worth $11,000 from Prouds jewellers in Stockland Rockhampton in January 2022.
Mr Muirhead said there was a risk Mr Beattie may reoffend if released on bail, and that level of risk was not acceptable.
He refused to grant Mr Beattie bail and adjourned his matters to September 19.
