Family of people buried in the Gympie cemetery have blasted the “low life w-----s” who drove over several graves at the weekend, destroying headstones and leaving huge skid marks on the lawn.

The damage was revealed in a scathing post on Facebook by Eric Googe, whose own parents’ memorial was among those desecrated and damaged in the incident, which happened about 10.30pm Saturday night.

Mr Googe shared photographs of the damage, showing the gravestones broken and scattered from the impact of a vehicle.

He said the destruction proved those responsible had been “dragged up” with absolute disrespect for themselves “and any moving or still thing around them”.

Speaking Wednesday Mr Googe said the behaviour was “absolutely disgusting”.

“We were never brought up to treat cemeteries like that,” he said.

Mr Googe said his parents had been buried at the cemetery for years and always been well maintained.
The destruction meant he was now calling for the Gympie Council to install gates or bollards on entrance roads to ensure cars cannot enter the cemetery after hours.

Gympie Cemetery supervisor Correy Jones said Tuesday two headstones at the bottom of one of the lawns and surrounding grass areas had been “severely damaged” by the hoons.

“Unfortunately, this type of event has happened before but fortunately no damage to property just grass and gardens,” Mr Jones said.

“The investigation is complete on our end and the police will conduct an investigation in due course.

“The family who owns the headstone has been informed, and the damage has been tidied up and will be repaired to our best abilities.”

Mr Googe’s post drew swift outrage from the community on social media.

Chris Henwood called it “possibly the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen” and Ange McDonald said it was “blatant disrespect and violation”.

Lance Pratt said it was the “lowest act” and Peter Redding called it a sign there was “no respect any more”.

Many others condemned the behaviour as “disgraceful”.
