A new proposed wind farm project in the Rockhampton region will need to undergo further assessment as it continues through the approvals process.

An application for the Moonlight Range Wind Farm proposed for Morinish South was deemed a “controlled action” under section 75 of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act, so the $1 billion project will be assessed under the preliminary documentation pathway.

The Moonlight Range Wind Farm is proposed to include 97 wind turbines on elevated terrain across 20,000 hectares.

If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2026, with a lifespan of up to 35 years when complete.

During the peak construction phase of the project up to 300 jobs are expected to be created, with 10 permanent jobs also to be created once the wind farm is completed.

Once complete the wind farm will be able to power more than 260,000 homes, and would have a 275kV connection into the Powerlink network.

Greenleaf Renewables director Tim Gregson said the company was pleased to understand what the assessment pathway will be for the proposed Project.

“Greenleaf is pleased to have clarity over the assessment pathway for Moonlight Range, and we are eager to commence the work required to inform the preliminary documentation process,” he said.

“There is still a lot of work to do before this Project could advance to the next stage, however understanding what information is required to inform your assessment is a step in the right direction.”

As part of the ongoing through the approvals stages, Greenleaf Renewables is also in the process of preparing technical assessments that will be part of its development application to the State Government.

The application is expected to be lodged in the coming months.

Moonlight Range will be one of the company’s three projects in its Queensland portfolio which includes Stony Creek Wind Farm, near Biggenden, and another South-East Queensland project which is in the pre-feasibility study and early engagement stage.
