The manager of a pizza delivery driver, who was allegedly shot at, has lauded the young man for his response saying it “saved him from the worst”.

New details can be revealed about the shock incident involving a Mount Pleasant Pizza Hut worker, where police alleged a man pointed rifle toward the teen driver and fired.

The incident occurred on May 15 while the 18-year-old from Slade Point was out making deliveries.

Since then a man has been arrested and remains behind bars on remand.

The driver’s manager, who spoke on the condition on his name was not published, said that the driver had finished making a delivery on Arthur St and was travelling to another address.

“He had to do a u-turn, so he was executing a three point turn in the street,” he said.

He said the teen had alleged to police a man emerged from the dark concealing a rifle.

“He (allegedly) aimed the gun at the passenger side door as the driver finished his turn,” the manager said.

The teen managed to pull away and it is alleged the shooter fired a single shot into the rear of the driver’s Kia Rio.

“The quick thinking of the driver saved him from the worst,” the manager said, as the worker managed to escape uninjured.

Police allege after firing the rifle, the shooter fled on foot before emergency services arrived at the scene.

The Kia Rio was fitted with a dashcam and footage of the incident was handed to police to help in their investigation.

The manager said he had been in contact with the teen, who was recovering from the incident and “doing fine”.

“Pizza Hut has offered all of the support they can, they have counselling for this sort of thing,” he said.

“We aren’t having too many bad episodes with customers, maybe once or twice a year someone will yell at our employees but that’s it.

“This could have happened to any person walking through the street, but it happened to a delivery driver.”

Days after the alleged incident, on May 20, police arrested Robbie Brian Mcalister.

The 34 year old appeared in Mackay Magistrates Court on May 21 charged with acts intended to do grievous bodily harm or transmit serious disease.

He did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody for matters to be mentioned on a date in July.
