Steven Munster will be remembered as a true gentleman, a humble human, a genuine bloke and a gifted sportsman when hundreds gather for his final farewell in Rockhampton next week.
Described as a “loved friend to many” in his funeral notice, Steven passed away suddenly in Sarina on Sunday, July 6, aged 58 years.
Just days later, his son Cameron led the Queensland Maroons rugby league team to an emotional, against the odds State of Origin series win in Sydney.
Family and friends will come together for a celebration of Steven’s life at noon on Friday, July 25, in the East Chapel of the Rockhampton Crematorium.
He was the beloved husband of Deborah, cherished father and father-in-law of Cameron and Bianca and Danielle and Camo and adored poppy to six grandchildren.
Steven’s death sent shockwaves through the Central Queensland community, sparking an outpouring of grief which resulted in a flood of condolence messages and tributes on social media.
The man affectionately known as “Prickles” worked at Stanwell and was a talented cricketer, considered one of Queensland country’s best batsman at the height of his career.
Rockhampton cricket identity Todd Wells said Steven was a “good cricketer on the field and more importantly a great bloke off it”.
That is a sentiment that has been echoed over and again.
Daughter Danielle said in a Facebook post that the family had been “completely shocked” and left “lost for words” by the incredible support they had received in such a difficult time.
“We have been so incredibly grateful and lucky to have family, friends and supporters as good as the ones we have,” she wrote.
“Without all of your love and support, we don’t know how we would have coped these last few days.
“Thank you ever so much to our closest friends, extended families Cameron and I have chosen in our partners, the rugby league community, Rockhampton friends and community, cricket community, our Sarina friends and more.
“I was told recently that ‘good people help good people’ and that could not be more true. Thanks to our man for instilling such great values in us.”
Danielle acknowledged everyone who had sent messages and called, as well as those who had provided meals and groceries, flowers and goodie boxes.
She said such kindness had been a great comfort to the family.
She signed off with a poignant message.
“We love you and rest in love, dad. Always and forever in our hearts.”
