An ageing service station just outside the Sarina township will be demolished to make way for a larger, modern replacement.
Laxmi Narayan Supermarket, via Yukon Projects, will build a new and improved Ampol service station at the existing site along the Bruce Highway, about 2km south of Sarina’s centre.
The upgraded facility, which taps into vacant adjacent land purchased in August 2019, will feature more parking, an improved convenience store, dedicated kitchen and dining area, toilets, six dual-sided fuel bowsers, and a heavy vehicle canopy with three dual-sided bowsers.
It will also introduce two electric car charging bays, plus a dedicated 10-space truck parking area to accommodate 25m B-double trucks at the rear.
Documents lodged to Mackay Regional Council reveal a planning meeting for Yukon Project’s proposal took place back in December 2020, with the company lodging its application in January 2022.
Laxmi Narayan Supermarket bought the service station in May 2017 for $2.8 million from Evan and Joan Hartley of Moranbah, and briefly listed it for sale again in August of that year.
But it held onto the business, later buying a 2.33ha lot next door in August of 2019 for $456,500 from Sarina-based Ballden Pty Ltd, c/- Caltex City Cabs in Mackay, which owned it for seven years.
The development includes installing two new 90kL underground double-walled fibreglass fuel tanks to service the bowsers.
“Protection of the public and the environment in terms of dust and noise control will be considered and actioned prior to demolition commencing,” documents state.
“The service station is well established at the site and will benefit from being redeveloped, refreshed and formalised.”
MRC has written to Yukon Projects stating the application has been approved subject to the developer paying a $127,965.70 infrastructure charge.
