Vietnamese bakery AIL Bakehouse could be gone for good as its three stores in Mackay and the Northern Beaches mysteriously close.
AIL Bakehouse launched at the Sydney St Markets on May 2, 2023 with the centre promoting the bakery’s “100 different types of freshly baked cakes” on Facebook.
On February 16, 2024 AIL opened its next location in Caneland Central, but the Caneland Central, Sydney Street Market and Northern Beaches Centre locations have all closed up.
The AIL Bakehouse Mackay Facebook page was also deleted.
At the Sydney Street Markets, the shuttered storefront had a notice informing the business they had been evicted.
The notice said AIL Bakehouse had a lease expiring in March 2030, but had breached the agreement and were notified on June 5, 2025.
On June 26 the notice of eviction was pinned on the closed door.
A Northern Beaches Centre business owner — who wished to remain anonymous — said they saw the business selling goods at a 20 per cent discount in the lead up to the closure.
They said the store was trading only in cash and a sign which said the Eftpos machine was broken was on display.
Australian Securities and Investments Commission documents reveal AIL Bakehouse was registered as a business on November 22, 2022 by director Tuan Hoang Phan of South Mackay.
The Fair Work Ombudsman was contacted and asked if they were aware of any claims against AIL Bakehouse.
A Fair Work Ombudsman spokesperson declined to comment.
“We encourage any workers with concerns to contact us directly for free advice and assistance,” they said.
