A Moranbah man has been charged with assaulting a GP who allegedly refused to give him a Covid exemption amid increasing tensions over the ongoing vaccination push.

The incident occurred on Friday, November 19 at Sonic HealthPlus Moranbah on St Francis Dr.

Police were called to the medical facility about 2.25pm following reports of an assault.

It is alleged a 48-year-old man was at the clinic and became involved in a verbal altercation with a 39-year-old GP “in relation to a private medical matter”, a Queensland Police spokeswoman said.

It is then alleged the older man punched the GP twice and pushed him to the ground.

It is understood the man had been seeking a vaccine exemption and was refused when he attacked the GP.

The 48 year old was arrested and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm in a public place while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance and being a public nuisance.

He will appear in court next month.
