Experts will give evidence at a special hearing about how a Rockhampton toddler is believed to have died from brain injuries.

The hearing will be held in relation to a murder charge laid against the child’s stepmother – Alicia Jane Lee.

She was charged with murder after the death of two-year-old Logan Shaun Hawkins in February, 2022.

Logan died on January 19, 2022, the day after emergency services were called to a Frenchville address and he was rushed to Rockhampton Hospital, and then on to Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane.

He died from a traumatic brain injury.

Ms Lee’s murder charge was mentioned in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court this afternoon, April 23.

A date was set for the special hearing – cross examination of witnesses – in Rockhampton Magistrates Court starting on August 25.

Defence lawyer Oscar Millroy informed the court it was expected to take 1.5 days and would hear evidence from the forensic pathologists involved in the case along with submissions from parties.

The court had previously heard the defence team had sought their own forensic pathologist expert to review the prosecution case evidence.

During a bail application on August 12, 2022, Crown prosecutor Aleksandra Nikolic said significant force was required to have resulted in the injuries identified by the doctor.

She said it was alleged Ms Lee was the only adult with Logan at the time the fatal injuries were inflicted.

Ms Lee’s bail conditions include no contact with Crown witnesses and no contact with children under the age of 10 without supervision.

No plea has been entered.
