A 30-year-old Mary Valley man with convictions for the indecent treatment of children has returned to court to face new charges.

An Imbil man has been warned he is on a “slippery slope” after failing to report his contact with children despite being required to as a result of previous sexual offending.
James Leslie Dean pleaded guilty to two counts of giving false and misleading information to police and five counts of failing to comply with reporting requirements.

Police prosecutor Barry Stevens told Gympie Magistrates Court, Dean “tried to minimise his involvement” by misleading police once his offending, which involved contacting children on Facebook, came to their attention.

Sgt Stevens said Dean was convicted for the indecent treatment of children under the age of 16.
At the time he was “given the benefit of probation”, Sgt Stevens said of the 30-year-old.
“No doubt he experiences deep and sincere remorse because he was caught,” Sgt Stevens said of these latest charges.
Dean, a one time apprentice fitter and turner who was now on Jobseeker, was supported in Gympie Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning by his mother who sat quietly at the back of the gallery as the facts of his crimes were read out.
She provided a letter outlining the importance of Dean’s role in caring for his sick and ageing father, who is in remission from throat cancer.
The court heard Dean lived with them.
Dean’s lawyer Jamiee Burns said a psychologist report on her client had scored him high for adult ADHD.
Dean‘s parole conditions included a strict curfew and prohibited use of social media.
During sentencing, Magistrate Chris Callaghan warned Dean he was on a “slippery slope” before handing him a six-month jail sentence with immediate parole.
