Investigations are continuing after multiple shots were fired in Coles Creek near Gympie on Friday afternoon where two people were “target shooting”.

Police were called just after 12.15pm to reports shots were fired towards the Bruce Highway, adjacent to Maher Road.

Investigations have shown two people were target shooting on private property on Maher Road, but it prompted concerned members of the public nearby to contact police.

No one was physically injured as a result of the incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

A man and woman are assisting police with their inquiries. A public safety exclusion zone has since been lifted and the Bruce Highway reopened.

The Bruce Highway was shut in both directions south of Gympie after midday near the Matilda service station at Traveston service station following initial reports of gunfire.

Police said emergency crews were called to the scene at Coles Creek, near Maher Rd at 12.15pm Friday.

The Courier-Mail understands specialist police including the Special Emergency Response Team and the Public Safety Response Team were initially sent with authorities fearing the worst.
