Last Friday night started out in the same way many young people begin their weekends for 18-year-old Kyan Martin, but instead of ending with an early-morning stumble into bed, it would end with his tragic and sudden death.

After a long day at his full-time job at Swickers in Kingaroy, the teenager was excited about heading to a birthday party at a local pub in the South Burnett.

He came home, had a chat with his mum and started getting ready.

Teagan Crisdale said her son asked her how he looked before he left, and she told him he looked “beautiful”.

“I said, ‘The clothes you’ve picked look amazing, you smell lovely and you look great’,” she said.

“I said, ‘I really hope that you have a fantastic time’. And then he left and he yelled out, ‘Love you, mum. I’ll see you in the morning’.”

Ms Crisdale had no idea that would be the last time she would hear those words from her “best friend” and only child.

Kyan was tragically killed after being hit by a car in the early morning on Saturday, July 19, at Hivesville.

Initial police investigations indicated a Toyota HiLux was travelling on Wondai Proston Road about 6am when it struck the teenager who was reportedly lying in the road.

Fighting back against commentary circulating on social media, Ms Crisdale said her son was not passed out drunk in the road and he did not commit suicide.

“I obviously can’t say too much because it’s an open investigation, but we just want to clear the air that he did not commit suicide,” she said.

“That was not what happened.”

The sudden death of her only child has shattered Ms Crisdale’s world; the two had been inseparable, barely spending a night apart from one another since she gave birth to him as a teenager.

“He and I were best friends,” she said.

“I had him at 16-years-old and it’s just been me and him. We do everything together.”

They moved to the South Burnett from Victoria in April 2024, for a “sea-change” and to be closer to Ms Crisdale’s mother.

Kyan attended Traralgon College in Victoria, a school located in the Latrobe Valley.

He wasn’t a big drinker, and spent most of his free time hanging out at home with his mum and their three dogs, watching movies together, and playing video games like Grand Theft Auto.

The pair loved watching the Harry Potter movies over and over, so much so that Mr Martin could recite “every single sentence”.

But music was his greatest passion.

“He would have music on in his room 24/7,” Ms Crisdale said.

“Even if he had a shower, he would have the music blasting. Everywhere he was, his music was playing.”

Kyan was into “typical teenage boy music”, like New Zealander or UK rap, and early 2000s post-hardcore bands like Amity Affliction.

Even though they had only been in the South Burnett for just over a year, he had made some “really good mates”, enjoyed his job at Swickers, and “was really happy here”.

Kyan had plans to do a boilermaking apprenticeship and to eventually work in the mines with his uncle and pop.

He was a kind young man, who “thought of everyone other than himself”, and was known to be a sweet and gentle person.

He could also be funny.

“He was the funniest person I have ever met in my entire life,” Ms Crisdale said.

“He had a quick wit. He lit up every room that he walked in.”

“ … once he got to know people, then he was a little bit more outgoing and you really got to see his beautiful, funny, cheeky nature.”

One of the most essential things about Kyan’s character was his close relationship with his mum and how open he was with showing his love for her.

“He would not leave a room without saying, ‘Love you, mum’,“ Ms Crisdale said.

“Even if he’d just seen me 30 seconds before walking in and out, (he would still say) ‘Love you, mum. Love you, mum. Love you, mum’.

In a heartbreaking reflection on her bond with her son, Ms Crisdale shared the depth of her grief and the unbreakable connection they shared.

“I’ve just lost my entire world. I’m not a person without him,” she said.

“I was a baby when I had him and we’ve never even really spent a night apart ever because he wanted to be with his mum all the time.”

“I was there for everything; the good, the bad, the ugly. He was my number one.”

Ms Crisdale and her family are planning to travel back to Victoria for Kyan’s funeral, so his old friends “can have their proper goodbye”.

A GoFundMe organised by his uncle, Riley Parkyn, to help fund the funeral and support the family through the devastating loss has collected more than $12,000 in less than two days.

But no amount of money will change the fact that a young mum has suffered an unimaginable loss and will never get to see her son grow up.

“I’m never going to be a nana now,” Ms Crisdale said.

“I’m never going to get to watch my son walk down the aisle. I’m never going to watch my son have his first love.

“I’m never going to be able to even have one more ‘I love you, mum’.”

No charges have been laid in relation to Kyan’s death, and Forensic Crash Unit investigations into the circumstances of the incident are underway.
