Linc Phelps co-writes Our Church hit country single on mental health

A Gympie musician has helped bring a country music single to life, sharing a powerful message about mental health support among mates.

Our Church by Matt Cornell and Adam Brand

A Gympie-born musician has helped bring an emotional country music hit to life in an effort to spotlight mental health support among mates.

Linc Phelps co-wrote Our Church with country musicians Adam Brand and Matt Cornell, alongside Gavin Carfoot, Brook Chivell and Jake Whittaker.

Mr Phelps said in a social media post he was proud of the music piece he created with five other writers.

“Feels great to have this out in the world,” he said in the post.

The stirring single came to life in a powerful music video depicting the true-life story and bond among “brothers and friends” when in need of some support.

The video starts out with Cornell telling Brand he’s struggling; that’s when Brand springs into action and rallies the troops to get “all the boys” around him, a press release stated.

The fellow writers helped record vocals on the track as depicted in the video.

The song looks back on the “comradery” between the musicians during the Covid pandemic when the music industry took a nosedive.

“Before Our Church was a song, it was our weekly catch up with a couple of my close brothers during Covid,” Brand said in the press release.

Cornell and Brand frequently hosted catch-ups at Gold Coast cafes with mates and took comfort in the time with their friends.

“We found it was helping us deal with the mental anguish of our industry being on its knees, the work and money we had lost,” Cornell said.

“But I found solace in my mates, in our little catch up every week. I’m not a religious man, but I decided to call it Church.

“On the final day, the last writing session was with Gavin Carfoot, Linc Phelps, Brook Chivell and Jake Whittaker. We discussed writing a song about mates, mates who are very close, kind of like a brotherhood.”

That’s when I proceeded to tell the boys about Church.”

The piece became a heartfelt tribute to professional dragracer Sam Fenech who died in a crash on the Willowbank Speedway in January, 2023.

“Adam’s great friend Wade Aunger, after hearing Our Church thought it would be a very moving tribute” Cornell said.

Phelps shared Cornell’s post on social media thanking his audience for making the single the top hit on the Apple Music Country chart and number three on the All Genres chart on the day of the release.
