Gympie region residents have called for hoons to “stop watching Fast and Furious” in the hope the sound of screeching tyres and black marks will disappear from the streets.

The Gympie Times put a call-out on Facebook to name Gympie’s worst hooning spots, receiving 150 comments in response.

Southside resident Bianca Renee Vieritz said the hooning was “driving her mad” on Sorensen Rd.

She said she counted seven regulars driving 100km/h and higher on what she dubbed “the race track”.

She reported seeing people come off the road into front yards before swiftly driving away, and a hoon losing control to barely recover while a woman with a pram was walking past.

“A pedestrian will get hit one day,” she said in the post.

Lynelle Allen commented hoons flew “past so fast you just get a glimpse of the colour of the car” on Groundwater Rd.

Legislation amendments introduced in Parliament in November, 2022 meant that any driver guilty of hooning could have their car destroyed as part of crash rescue training for firefighters.

“If you tear up the road, we’ll tear up your car – it’s that simple,” Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said.

“Those people who intentionally endanger their lives, the lives of their passengers and other road users by choosing to engage in illegal, stupid behaviour should expect to be found by the Queensland Police Service, and have their car destroyed by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services as part of their road crash rescue training.”

Sorensen Rd was a street named to be frequented by dangerous hooning.
