Gympie crashes: 10 times drivers were injured on Gympie region roads in May

From a beach motorbike crash to a freak collision with a kangaroo, this list of serious accidents in May resulted in injuries that needed paramedic and hospital care.

In light of National Road Safety Week, The Gympie Times has reflected on the 10 road crashes that have occurred in this region this month.

Of the 10, three involved motorbikes and bicycles, and one resulted in the tragic death of an elderly man.

From Rainbow Beach to Kilkivan, these are the significant motorbike, bicycle and car crashes that left passengers, drivers and rider injured:

May 3, 2021 - Man flown to hospital with head injuries after Rainbow Beach motorbike crash

A man in his 40s was airlifted to hospital after he was injured in a motorbike accident at Rainbow Beach on May 3.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics were first on scene at 3:32pm and treated the rider for chest and back injuries.

The Sunshine Coast-based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was called to the beach, north east of Gympie, just after 4:15pm.

A LifeFlight spokesperson said the man had been travelling with a group of other motorcycle riders along the beach, when his bike hit some wet sand and he lost control.

The patient was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a stable condition after being treated at a nearby oval.

May 3, 2021 - Man, two children hurt in crash at Pomona

A man and two children were taken to hospital after their car collided with a tree at Pomona on May 3.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash near the intersection of Yurol Forest Drive and Songbird Drive just after 3pm.

The man suffered chest injuries, while the children reported minor injuries from the crash.

They were taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition.

May 4, 2021 - Car rolls on Bauple Woolooga Road near Miva, two people injured

Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene of a single car rollover near Dinna Creek at Miva, north of Gympie, on the Bauple Woolooga Road on May 4.

Queensland Police Media reported there were two people travelling in the vehicle when it left the road before midday, overturned and ended up on its side in the bush on the side of the road about 18km from the Wide Bay Highway intersection.

Both occupants were treated at the scene by paramedics, one for minor injuries and abrasions, the other for more serious injuries including head and chest injuries.

Neither person was trapped in the vehicle.

May 5, 2021 - Two-vehicle crash at Tiaro puts four people in hospital

Four patients were taken to Hervey Bay Hospital after a two-vehicle smash at Tiaro on May 5.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the patients, including two teenagers, were taken to Hervey Bay hospital in stable conditions.

The crash occurred on Redbank Rd at 6:19pm.

One of the teenagers suffered shoulder injuries and the other suffered leg injuries as a result of the crash.

May 6, 2021 - Man taken to Gympie Hospital after bicycle crash

A man who was riding his bike in the early hours of the morning was taken to hospital after he crashed and injured himself at Gympie.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Monkland Street and Spicer Street around 1.45am on May 6.

Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics took the man to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition with a shoulder injury.

May 10, 2021 - Two hurt in crash at Wallu

Two people were taken to Gympie Hospital after their truck veered off the road and rolled over at Wallu on May 10.

Fireys, police and paramedics were called to the crash on Maryborough Cooloola Road about 6km north of its turn off from Tin Can Bay Road.

A Queensland ambulance spokeswoman said the two patients were taken to hospital as a precaution for possible spinal injuries.

Police and fireys were investigating a possible fuel leak following the crash, which happened just after 3pm.

May 11, 2021 - Man crashes motorbike into kangaroo at Glenwood

A man was assessed for minor injuries following a motorcycle crash at Glenwood on May 11.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the man hit a kangaroo on Neerdie Road at 6.12am, 2km west of Ward St.

QAS transported the man to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition with a head injury.

Police were not required to attend the scene.

May 15, 2021 - Elderly cyclist killed in crash at Kilkivan 

A 78-year-old New South Wales man who lost his life near Kilkivan on May 15, was identified as a well-known endurance cyclist.

Tributes flowed for Paul Ardill, after he was involved in a crash on the Wide Bay Highway near Kilkivan.

Queensland Police said initial investigations indicated at about 10am Mr Ardill was travelling east approaching the intersection with Rossmore Road when he veered into the path of a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

Tragically Mr Ardill died at the scene.

May 16, 2021 - Bike, car crash on Bruce Highway near Gympie

A night-time crash between a car and a motorcycle in the centre of Gympie left a man in hospital with a leg injury.

Paramedics were called to the intersection of the Bruce Highway and Channon Street just after 8pm on May 16.

The man, of unknown age, was taken to Gympie Hospital in a stable condition.

May 18, 2021 - Two hurt in crash on Bruce Highway at Curra

Two people were treated by paramedics after their vehicles collided at a notorious Bruce Highway intersection at Curra.

Emergency crews were called to the corner of the Highway and David Drive, near the Puma service station, about 5.30pm on May 18.

A QAS spokesman said a 74-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman were injured in the crash; each was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
