A parolee who committed break-ins at Gladstone not long after being released from prison, has been sentenced for his crimes.

Joshua Adam Vohland, 38, appeared in custody in Gladstone Magistrates Court on December 6 where he pleaded guilty to charges including enter dwelling and commit, trespass, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing tainted property.

Vohland had previously been remanded in custody after making a bid for bail.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said early on the morning of October 28, Vohland broke into a unit at Off Lane, Gladstone, and stole items before breaking into another unit which he used to store the stolen things.

Sgt Hoskins said the occupants of both units were away at the time.

The court heard that the stolen items included bank cards, visa cards, health care cards and concession cards, as well as mobile phones, a TV and Harry Potter collectibles.

Sgt Hoskins said that Vohland had a nine-page criminal history and he had previously received a jail sentence for grievous bodily harm after he plunged a knife into the sleeping victim’s stomach.

The court heard that Vohland committed these latest offences not long after being released from prison on parole in July.

Solicitor Rio Ramos said Vohland had a history of drug offending and he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Ms Ramos said Vohland did not want to be medicated for his mental health conditions and he then succumbed to using illicit drugs because they “calmed him down.”

Ms Ramos said while in prison, Vohland had done all of the substance intervention courses he was required to do.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan sentenced Vohland to nine months’ jail, declared 39 days pre-sentence custody as time served, and fixed parole eligibility at January 28, 2024.

A forfeiture order was made and convictions were recorded.
