A Central Queensland driver says he was “rammed off the road” by another motorist on the night that police busted him drug-driving.

Kaine Allen Wright, 33, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court on November 29 to drug-driving.

The court heard that Wright was involved in a traffic crash about 10.40pm on June 10 and after police arrived and tested him at the scene, he returned a positive to cannabis.

The court heard that Wright had no previous drug-driving offences on his six-page traffic history.

Solicitor Sophie-Lee Oliver said Wright instructed that someone had “rammed him off the road” on the night of the crash.

“And that’s what caused the collision,” Ms Oliver said.

Ms Oliver said Wright, a trade assistant and father of three, had been using drugs to self medicate for depression and anxiety, but since this offence he had sought appropriate medical treatment for his mental health.

Ms Oliver said previously, Wright had used meth and struggled with alcohol.

She said he was now engaging with Alcohol and Other Drugs Service (AODS).

“He instructs that he no longer uses any illicit drugs and is now clean, and is required to do drug testing for his employment.”

Ms Oliver said Wright had to explain over the phone to his father that his car was “quite badly damaged” in the crash.

“His father was not impressed with this as he had contributed to purchasing the vehicle for (Wright).

“(His father) expressed his disappointment with (him) about the damage - during this heated discussion and subsequent argument, my client was sitting on a park bench nearby.”

Magistrate Mary Buchanan fined Wright $500 and disqualified him from driving for one month.

A traffic conviction was recorded.
