A Central Queensland father of six has been told to “get off the drugs” with his latest offending putting him at risk of serving actual jail time.

Brett John Rodgers, 45, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to charges including five counts of possessing dangerous drugs, failing to properly dispose of a syringe, possessing drug utensils, possessing property suspected of being proceeds of a drug offence, and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The court heard Rodgers offending happened between December last year and March this year and included police busting him with methamphetamine and cannabis in his car.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said on another occasion, police stopped Rodgers on a push bike and found him with 3g of cannabis and a knife in his waistband.

Sgt Hoskins said Rodgers told police he was on his way home from playing poker.

On a later date, Rodgers was found with a syringe and then subsequently he was busted with methamphetamine, cannabis, drug utensils and money suspected of being the proceeds of drug crime.

The court heard Rodgers, with a 10-page criminal history, was on a suspended sentence for drugs and weapons offending when he committed these latest offences.

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Rodgers was a father of six who was trying to apply for medicinal cannabis.

Magistrate Mary Buchanan then said: “He’s not going to get medicinal methamphetamine” and added Rodgers’ ongoing meth offending was “the more concerning part.”

Mr Pepito then said if Rodgers did not do something about his drug use, he was just going to end up in custody.

During sentencing, Magistrate Buchanan told Rodgers “you need to get off the drugs.”

She activated the suspended sentence and sentenced Rodgers to 12 months’ jail with immediate parole.

Convictions were recorded.
