A man who stole 80 parcels while working as a courier for Australia Post in Central Queensland, has been sentenced in court.

Charles Robert Wagener, 27, pleaded guilty in Gladstone Magistrates Court to stealing by clerks and servants.

The court heard that Wagener was working as a contracted courier for Australia Post when he picked up 80 parcels from the Gladstone depot in Chapple Street, and rather than deliver them to their rightful owners, he took them home to his place.

There, he opened the 80 parcels before subsequently returning them to the Chapple Street depot.

The court heard when Wagener returned the parcels to the depot, Australia Post management reported the matter to police.

When Wagener was questioned by police, he told them he made “a stupid decision” to make money by selling the parcels.

He told police he then realised he was making a mistake and returned the parcels to the depot.

The court heard Wagener had a six-page criminal history which included multiple stealing offences.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Merrilyn Hoskins said Wagener had been in a position of trust working for Australia Post and by committing these offences, “a period of imprisonment is almost certainly warranted.”

Magistrate Mary Buchanan referred to the previous stealing offences on Wagener’s criminal history and said: “It makes you wonder what sort of screening process Australia Post has.”

Sgt Hoskins replied: “Yes.”

Solicitor Jun Pepito said Wagener was a father of three who had been employed at Australia Post for a week when he offended.

Mr Pepito said Wagener lost his job as a result and he was now employed driving trucks for a different company.

The solicitor said Wagener suffered from anxiety, depression and bipolar disorder.

During sentencing, Magistrate Buchanan said Wagener was in a position of trust working for Australia Post and he “breached it significantly.”

She sentenced him to four months’ jail, wholly suspended for an operational period of 18 months.

A conviction was recorded.
