A woman who downed five beers in under two hours told police she had no reason to be driving when intercepted, a court heard.

Joanne Dale Maxwell, 60, pleaded guilty in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on Monday to drink driving.

On May 3, around 7.45pm, police intercepted Maxwell driving a black Hyundai Elantra on the Dawson Highway, Calliope.

Maxwell submitted to a roadside breath test which returned a positive result and she was detained for further testing and questioning.

When questioned Maxwell admitted to drinking five heavy beers since 6pm and offered no emergency reason for driving.

Maxwell’s second breath test returned a reading of .063 and she was issued a notice to appear in court.

Magistrate Bevan Manthey convicted and fined Maxwell $400 and suspended her from driving for six weeks. A work licence was granted and no conviction was recorded.
