Laidley Police Station was evacuated on Friday afternoon after a man attended the station to surrender a 20th century grenade he found.
The man was believed to have been cleaning out his grandfather’s old shed when he came across the World War II relic.
A Queensland Police spokesman said the man, “believing he was doing the right thing” took the grenade to the police station to surrender the item about 4pm on Friday.
“Out of an abundance of caution, officers have evacuated the building and technical experts will soon remove the item,” the spokesman said.
“Police are confident there is no danger to the public at this time.”
Lockyer Valley Regional Council confirmed on Facebook that their Laidley office, located on the same street as the police station, was closed on Friday afternoon “due to unforeseen circumstances”.
It is understood Queensland Police Service is liaising with Australian Defence Force authorities on how to dispose of the grenade.
