A man caught carrying a knife down the street told police he was doing so because “Maryborough’s dangerous”.
Luka Alan Dove pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrate’s Court to possessing dangerous drugs and possessing a knife in a public place.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Balam Selvadurai said at 3.18am on August 16, police were patrolling Lennox St and saw Dove on a bike without a helmet.
The officers had a conversation with Dove and a search was carried out.
Police found 0.5 grams of cannabis and a knife, Sgt Selvadurai said.
Dove was cooperative with police, telling the officers it was medicinal cannabis, but he did not have a current prescription, and it was not in a container with labels on it, the court heard.
Duty lawyer Warren Hunter said Dove was caring for his mother and receiving a carer’s pension.
He said he had been assured by his client that it was medicinal cannabis, but it had not been packaged in the correct manner at that time.
Dove had been going out and took the supply that he needed, Mr Hunter said.
Magistrate John Milburn said he accepted the cannabis was for medicinal purposes, but in its form, it had been rendered illegal.
He said protection was not a lawful reason for carrying the knife.
Mr Milburn fined Dove $700 and convictions were recorded.
