Motorcyclist Mick Gesler killed in tragic Eli Waters crash

A motorcyclist, tragically killed in a crash at a busy Queensland intersection, has been identified as a devoted grandfather who died “doing what he loved best”.

Mick Gesler, a 75-year-old Dundowran Beach man, died of his injuries on November 11 after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a Holden sedan on the corner of Maryborough Hervey Bay Road and Fairway Drive in Eli Waters about 7.30am on November 1.

A vintage motorcycle enthusiast who tragically died 10 days after a serious crash has been remembered as a man who was devoted to his grandchildren.

Mick Gesler, a 75-year-old Dundowran Beach man, died of his injuries on November 11 after the motorcycle he was riding collided with a Holden sedan on the corner of Maryborough Hervey Bay Road and Fairway Drive in Eli Waters about 7.30am on November 1.

Mr Gesler was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital in a serious condition with pelvic and leg injuries and later flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

The driver of the Holden sedan, a 70-year-old Aspley man, was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital following the crash with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to a funeral notice posted for Mr Gesler, he was born in Budapest, Hungary on February 16, 1948.

From a toddler Mick was raised by his Serbian mother in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Mr Gesler immigrated to Australia as a young man.

A motorcyclist has died from injuries sustained in a crash in Eli Waters after fighting for his life for 10 days.

He lived and worked in Sydney until he moved to Hervey Bay on January 1, 1996.

“Mick had a passion for both new and vintage motor bikes and a passion for cooking,” the funeral notice read.

“He enjoyed watching soccer and tennis.

“Mick devoted his life to his grandsons.”

Mr Gesler is survived by his son John and daughter-in-law Tania, his grandsons, Alex, 14, Jesse, 9, and Hunter, 6, as well as his soulmate of 34 years, Jackie.

“Tragically Mick was taken away doing what he loved best, riding a vintage Moto Guzzi,” the notice read.

“Now forever riding in the wind.”

A funeral service will be held at Fraser Coast Crematorium and Bayside Memorial Gardens in Hervey Bay on November 24 from 11am.

“For those friends who are avid bike enthusiasts, please ride your bike to honour Mick,” it said.
After the service a motorcycle cortege will take Mr Gesler to Point Vernon’s Polson Cemetery where he will be laid to rest.

Instead of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to RACQ Life Flight Rescue.
