A Western Downs man has fronted court after he punched a boy repeatedly in the head while at a supermarket claiming the kid had been walking around “trying to be a gangster”.
Kaide Michael James Hogan appeared in Dalby Magistrates Court on August 22 after he assaulted a 15-year-old boy at a regional supermarket.
Police prosecutor Chris Hutchins said the 18-year-old was already inside the supermarket on June 18 speaking with a cashier when he saw the boy, who was known to him, enter the store.
“There was verbal communication when (the kid) entered the store,” Sergeant Hutchins said.
“(Hogan) punched (the victim) multiple times with a closed fist and assaulted him again punching him in the head.”
The court was told the victim suffered a lump to the head but refused medical treatment, and his mum reported it to the police station where authorities reviewed the CCTV footage at the supermarket.
Hogan, who was then banned from the supermarket “for life”, went to the grocery store another two times in the following four days and was charged with trespass.
“He made admissions to police and said his temper got the better of him,” Sergeant Hutchins said.
Defence lawyer Claire Graham said her client previously had a positive relationship with the boy but believed he should attempt to pay a mutual friend back following an incident involving property.
“He acted completely excessively and knows it was the wrong thing to do,” she said.
The man chimed in and told the court he was insisting the teen victim do the right thing.
“I know he’s classed as a child but you don’t walk around trying to be a gangster,” he said.
Magistrate Kyna Morice acknowledged the significant of assaulting a child, and the difference in size between the pair.
Hogan pleaded guilty to common assault and two counts of trespass.
He was fined $950 total for the offences, no conviction was recorded.
