A man assaulted his then girlfriend, destroying her belongings, when an argument broke out after he was caught texting his ex on Valentine’s Day.

Casey John Alexander Frid appeared in Dalby District Court on July 19 via videolink after he launched a violent attack on his former girlfriend.

Crown prosecutor Cameron Wilkins told the court on February 14 the 35-year-old got into an argument with his short-term girlfriend after he had been accused of cheating on her with his ex-partner.

The court was told Frid fessed up to contacting his ex and had met up with her that day.

Following the argument the victim attended a study class when she received phone calls, texts and even emails from Frid who had made threats to destroy her property and harm himself.

“When (the victim) entered her house she saw the TV and other electronics had been destroyed,” Mr Wilkins said.

“(Frid) stood in front of her, her back was against a wall when he punched the wall three times next to her head.

“He pushed her back by her throat and applied pressure, again punching the wall near her head.”

The court was told as the woman left the house she could hear him smashing more of her property, and she called the police.

Defence barrister Frank Martin said while the victim had no physical injury it wasn’t to say the defendant didn’t impose mental consequences on his ex-girlfriend but said it had all started from the victim being jealous.

“It wasn’t a one-way street, it was mainly to do with her being jealous,” he said.

Judge Alexander Horneman-Wren SC said, “well it was Valentine’s Day after all”.

Mr Martin highlighted Frid’s history of “terrible” drug use and said the 155 days in pre-sentence custody that the man had spent had been difficult due to overcrowding in the prison.

Mr Horneman-Wren highlighted the man’s “obvious” issue with “behaving violently” and the fact he had committed the crimes while on a suspended sentence.

Frid pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault and two counts of wilful damage.

His remaining suspended sentence of seven months was completely activated, with Mr Horneman-Wren declaring 155 days in custody as time served and was granted a parole release date of October 13.
