A Western Downs festival celebrating the areas sawmill and timber history has been hailed a success with more than 3000 people through the gates.

The 23rd annual Jandowae Timbertown Festival kicked off last weekend with a range of timber-themed events and displays to keep guests entertained.

President Danny Wassell said the event was important to keep the area’s history alive.

“It went really well, the weather was nice for a winter's day and we had about 3000 through the gates,” he said.

“Jandowae was built around sawmills and in the last ten years we lost them but we started the festival while we still had them.

“It started in 2001, it’s a small town and we wanted to do something to bring people together and bring people to town to show them what we do.

“It is important to remember the history and heritage of our town, even though we don't have sawmills anymore we are keeping it going to teach the kids what Jandowae was built on.”

Mr Wassell said there was a range of displays on offer.

“We had chainsaw races, log loading displays, saw mill displays, the grand parade, kids entertainment, live music all day, market stalls pretty much everything you can think of, ” he said.

“It's a bit of an everything festival, but it’s really about the heritage of the timber industry.

“It's really good because it brings a lot of people back to Jandowae, we had people from Cairns and New South Wales and had 150 caravans there. Everyone was saying they really loved the festival.”

Mr Wassell said the future of the festival was looking strong with a young committee to spearhead it into the future.

“This year we had a really young committee with 19 and 20 year olds and we are hoping they stick around and keep that history alive,” he said.

“This year we had more vehicle displays, more motors and sawmill equipment and next time we do it we are hoping to double the size and get even more machinery displays.”
