Dalby residents were out in full force to watch competitive back-to-back footy and spread awareness and raise funds for type 1 diabetes on Saturday.

The annual event was started by the family of Dalby Wheatmen C-grade player Zac Storey 12 years ago, to spread awareness of the condition he was diagnosed with at age six.

Zac’s mum Brenda said her son always showed ambition to follow his father Ted onto the rugby field and she didn’t want diabetes to stand in his way.

Mrs Storey said she was concerned about the challenges of type 1 diabetes within the sport, and wanted Zac and his teammates to feel comfortable in managing it while in the sheds or at training.

She said the Dalby and District Rugby Union Club was more than happy to stand behind the family, which is where the Jelly Baby Day/Sponsors Day was brought to life.

Funds from the annual day go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

“It looks like this is our biggest year yet, I’m so thankful to everyone who gets involved,” Mrs Storey said.

The fun-filled day included back-to-back footy games, raffles, face painting and a DJ that kept everyone in high spirits throughout the day.
