An old water tower that has long dominated the landscape in a Bundaberg suburb might not be the most prominent building once a 26.9m 5G tower is installed.

An application to instal the tower has been lodged with Bundaberg Regional Council and members of the public can make submissions on the proposal until November 7, 2022.

Bundaberg is a city with a history of 5G innovation, and in 2019 it was one of the first cities in the world to be hooked up to the wireless internet technology.

One of the reasons Bundaberg was chosen, at the time, was due to the importance of the area as a regional business hub, particularly for agriculture and tourism.

Telstra regional general manager May Boisen previously told the Bundaberg NewsMail that 5G opened up new opportunities for customers.

“The possibilities 5G offers are extensive,” she said.

“Its potential to deliver high speeds and low latency can enable not only fast download speeds for our customers, but also unlocks capacity for thousands of new devices working together on our network.”

Last year, submissions were made for a 5G tower on Kensington St, Norville.

The proposed East Bundaberg tower would front Bridge St with a 40m setback, and take up 4.5 per cent of the site.

What is 5G?

In telecommunications, 5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for broadband mobile networks, which mobile phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019, and is the planned successor to the 4G networks which provided connectivity previously.
