A man has been charged following a car crash that left a 41-year-old Ipswich woman dead on Tuesday morning.
Police alleged that a 2009 blue Hyundai Getz was travelling west along Cascade St, Raceview, about 10.30am when it left the road and struck a power pole, coming to rest on its bonnet in a driveway.
Bystanders rushed to help the two occupants of the vehicle, however a woman passenger died at the scene.
Forensic crash investigators charged a 45-year-old Raceview man with one count dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death whilst under the influence of liquor or a drug.
The man was treated for serious injuries and was taken to Ipswich Hospital in a stable condition.
He is expected to appear in the Ipswich Magistrates Court today.
Tragically, this is the third death on Queensland roads in less than 48 hours, bringing this year’s road toll to 208.
A 60-year-old Stanthorpe man died on Monday afternoon on the New England Highway and a 52-year-old Gladstone man died Sunday morning on the Bruce Highway.
Within the same period two people suffered critical injuries in traffic crashes – a 17-year-old boy in Edmonton, and a 24-year-old e-scooter rider in South Brisbane.
Last year, 277 people died on Queensland roads - a figure 11.6 per cent higher than the previous five year average. There are fears this year could beat those grim numbers.
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the losses were devastating for friends, families, and the first responders.
“The hard part is, what more can we say? We say it over and over and still these tragedies happen,” the spokeswoman said.
“The message is clear – obey road rules, wear your seatbelt, don’t speed, don’t drive with drugs or alcohol in your system. Be careful and respect the roads.”
