QLD's 2022 road toll described as "concerning"

A Stanthorpe man has died and another three people have been injured after a horror crash on a major highway.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at the intersection of the New England Highway and Old Caves Rd just before 4pm Monday.

Initial investigations suggest a car turning north onto the highway collided with a southbound 4WD.

A 60-year-old Stanthorpe man, who was driving the car, suffered critical injuries in the crash and died at the scene.

The only passenger in the car, a 57-year-old Stanthorpe man, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, along with the 83-year-old Lawrence man driving the 4WD and their 59-year-old passenger.

It is understood all three were taken to Stanthorpe Hospital in stable conditions.

The Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating the incident.
