Those interested in “peeking behind the curtain” into how a drag queen gets ready are in luck, with an Alice Springs festival offering just that — and more – over the next four days.
FabAlice kicked off at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on Thursday night, and with “so much going on”, Alice Springs was getting fab, drag queen Miss Marzi Panne said.
“Look, Alice is fab without FabAlice … but what’s really great is that (FabAlice) celebrates the connection to Priscilla (Queen of the Desert) and you know, all of the glitter and the fun and the magic,” they said.
FabAlice festival organiser Stuart Ord said there had been a “whole year” of work to put this year’s “sensational” festival together.
Based on the film Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Mr Ord said the bus ending up in Alice Springs at the end of the film was “something very, very special” for the town.
Over the next days, the festival will deliver lip sync battles, night markets, drag aqua aerobics, drag queen bingo, and more to the Red Centre capital.
And for those interested in “peeking behind the curtain” to see how a drag queen gets ready, Miss Marzi Panne said there was a drag “look and learn” workshop on Sunday morning.
Dressed in a dramatic rendition of an Australian cork hat, Miss Marzi Panne confirmed their “campy Australiana” outfit was successful in keeping the flies away.
“It’s practical and beautiful,” they said.
