The organisers behind one of Australia’s most successful multicultural festivals says this year’s event in Toowoomba will feature a slew of new features and attractions.
The hugely-popular Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival will return on May 30 at Queens Park, after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to COVID-19.
The public got a taste of the action at Monday’s launch, with members of the Filipino community performing an incredible set of dances for onlookers.
Toowoomba International Multicultural Society president Gitie House, who helped found the festival, said its 15th edition would include a number of acts not seen before.
“We still have the lovely food, but we’re also going to have 24 languages (featured),” she said.
“We have a translator that will translate poetry, there will be an English phone booth that says ‘hello’ in many different languages.
“We have llamas, we have a circus act, two live bands and in addition to everything else, we have an Aussie slang tent.”
Ms House said attendees would need to book their tickets online before arriving, due to new COVID-19 regulations.
“The thing with COVID-19 restrictions is there is a limited number of people we can have at the festival, so people have to buy their ticket first,” she said.
“Those tickets are on-sale now.”
The Toowoomba Regional Council agreed to donate more money to the festival’s organisers this year, in recognition of the increased costs that go into making events COVID-safe.
