One of the Toowoomba region’s most popular local festivals has been boosted by extra funding from the council.
Councillors voted on Wednesday to sponsor the Toowoomba Languages and Cultures Festival again, which is normally held in August but has been moved to May this year.
The festival, which has run for several years at Queens Park, is a celebration of the Garden City’s multicultural population, with 14 per cent of the region are born overseas.
After the 2020 event was cancelled, TRC multicultural community development officer Roberto Garcia argued the council should give $28,000 to the organisers, up from the usual $25,000.
“The Toowoomba International Multicultural Society (organiser) has requested a $35,000 sponsorship commitment from the council to provide it with funding certainty to commence planning the 2021 event,” his report said.
“The council has been a previous platinum sponsor of this event in the amount of $25,000.
“The council’s sponsorship assessment process has been applied and a panel of officers have met to assess the application. Based on the three key principles of community benefit, strategic alignment and risk management, it is recommended that $28,000 of sponsorship funding be provided to TIMS for the 2021 event.”
Crs Carol Taylor and Tim McMahon both spoke strongly in favour of the funding, with the former saying the festival was a landmark event for Toowoomba.
“This is an iconic event, and to see it from the start when it was a trailer in Frog’s Hollow to what we have now is wonderful,” she said.
“I don’t believe this should ever be expected to fund itself and it will always need funding from council.
“This is one way where our community can come together and residents can share their culture.”
The funding was carried unanimously.
