While there are many traditions within an agricultural show, one stands out with poise, beauty and dignity that lifts the face of the show and promotes the agricultural industry to the next generation – the showgirl.
For the newly crowned 2024 Darling Downs showgirl Madison Rawlinson, the experience has been empowering, as she tackles her nerves and takes on public speaking surrounded by the support of other showgirls and entrants.
Growing up in Dalby and working at the council in admin, Ms Rawlinson said she went for Dalby Showgirl in 2023 to “get more involved in the community and build confidence”.
Since then she has moved from strength to strength, and at the Toowoomba Royal Show took the title of 2024 Darling Downs Showgirl to represent the region at Brisbane’s Ekka.
“I feel very honoured to have been chosen, I’m very excited to see where it takes me,” she said.
She was most looking forward to getting to met the other showgirls, experience the shows with them, and learn new ways to work with communities around Queensland.
Each year a Darling Downs Showgirl is chosen from 19 of the region’s shows at the Toowoomba Royal Show, and this year there were only nine contestants in the running, as the competition works hard to attract the younger generation.
Part of the role of the Darling Downs Showgirl is to inspire that generation to become more involved in the show society and the agricultural industry.
“Take that leap, it’s not that scary, it can change your life and give you so much more confidence,” Ms Rawlinson advised anyone thinking of entering in the future.
“It’s so empowering being around other powerful women.”
