ASPIRING showgirls will have fewer restrictions as of August 1, as Queensland Agriculture Society tries to rebuild after a dismal 2020 season.

To qualify for the 2021 state finals, Queensland women aged 18 to 28, married or unmarried, will be able to run for showgirl.

“All of the completions we run are constantly being reviewed to make sure they reflect current conditions and the social changes happening in our society,” Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies general manager Trevor Beckingham said.

“This was just an upgrade of that process.

“We probably took a bit longer to make this decision because as you can imagine it’s got a number of interested stakeholders in the competition and we had to make sure the consultation covered all bases.”

The show society has suffered a massive loss due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, with many shows postponed or cancelled.

“Hopefully by easing the rule we can attract more women who wish to compete for showgirl,” Mr Beckingham said.

“We want to be able to provide all women with the opportunity and we didn't feel as though a rule that was drawn up 30 odd years ago reflected our current climate.”

Former Showgirl Shannon Hardy supported the rule change, believing it made the contest more inclusive.

“The changes to Miss Showgirl are brilliant. Hopefully the more inclusive terms for entrants will help us gain high numbers in years to come,” she said.
