The region’s iconic entertainment venue announced the Broadway version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein’s production would be the theatre’s official musical of 2024, on Tuesday.

The Tony Award-winning production premiered on Broadway, in New York in 2013, with six performances set to be held in the Empire’s auditorium next March.

Queensland-based director Tim Hill said the romantic comedy would tell the classical tale of Cinderella, but with a modern twist and new characters.

Audiences will be mesmerised by the magical story, as well as the music, dance numbers and set designs.

“What is so brilliant about this version of Cinderella is how they really empower the title role, without losing any of the magic of the beautiful score and enchanting fairy-tale,” he said.

“We are not just searching for the perfect Cinderella, who we hope will be feisty and powerful, but also a diverse range of captivating characters to bring this enchanting production to life.”

Cast applications will open soon while auditions will be held in late November.

“With a long line of directing credits, Tim’s wealth of experience and unwavering enthusiasm will bring the magic and beauty of this reimagined tale to life,” Empire’s general manager Giuliana Bonel said.

“Cinderella is an opportunity for local actors, singers, musicians, and dancers to work with a professional creative team, and extend their performance experience across the performing arts industry.”
