King and Queen Consort’s grandchildren to play central roles in coronation

In a major break with tradition, the King and Queen’s grandchildren will be part of the coronation ceremony amid reports of a title change.

The Queen Consort’s teenage grandchildren will play a central role in King Charles’s coronation alongside Prince George in two major breaks with tradition, The Sunday Times reports.

It comes amid reports that Buckingham Palace is set to officially describe Camilla as ‘Queen’, rather than ‘Queen Consort’.

The change is likely to come after King Charles’s coronation on May 6, sources have told the Mail Online.

In a “bold move”, Camilla's grandchildren will be included in the Westminster Abbey ceremony on May 6 to signify their closeness to the monarch and his wife, The Sunday Times reports.

The Queen Consort has five grandchildren - Lola, 15, and Freddy, 13, Eliza, 15 and twins Louis and Gus, 13.

The Sunday Times reports that Camilla has asked her grandchildren to hold the canopy over her as she is anointed with holy oil during the most sacred part of the ceremony.

This part of the ceremony is usually performed by duchesses, but the Queen Consort specifically wanted her grandchildren to take part.

“The Queen Consort does not want duchesses. She would like it to be her grandchildren,” a royal source told The Sunday Times.

In another new move, a major coronation role for Prince George is being discussed

During the past two coronations, young heirs have wanted from the congregation, but the King and Queen Consort are keen for Prince George to play a more central part as heir to the throne.

The King and Queen are due to meet with the Prince and Princess of Wales about a role for the nine-year-old as long as he not subjected to overwhelming scrutiny.

A royal source told The Sunday Times the King and Queen Consort’s desire to give her grandchildren an official role showed they were not afraid “to shake things up a bit to reflect the realities of modern life, of which blended families is a central element”.
