Daryl Braithwaite says he was “completely overwhelmed” at Harry Styles’ second Melbourne show, where the pop superstar covered The Horses.

Harry scratched The Horses, written by Rickie Lee Jones, and a massive hit from Braithwaite in 1990, at his first Melbourne show on Friday.

But he jumped back on The Horses on Saturday, turning into a stadium sized singalong at Docklands.

“What an extraordinary night it was at Harry’s gig,” Braithwaite said on Facebook on Sunday morning. “I just love the feeling of these massive concerts as they take on a life of their own.

“Harry Styles is so good at what he does and they loved him. I was completely overwhelmed by the night. Thank you to Harry and his army.”

Styles thrilled Melbourne fans on Saturday with his cover of the iconic Aussie anthem as an emotional Daryl Braithwaite watched on.

Fans at the show were quick to spot Braithwaite in the crowd at a packed Marvel Stadium and posted a video to TikTok.

The TikTok videos showed Braithwaite looking reflective as he swayed and sang along to the classic cover, which Styles previously performed at his Perth concert.

The Aussie singer told Ben Fordham’s Sydney-based 2GB breakfast show last weekend he had found Styles’ version of The Horses “moving”.

“I did get the chance to meet Harry four to five years ago when he was touring, only very briefly, he seemed like a lovely guy,” he told 2GB.

Braithwaite told 2GB the Perth version “sounded great”.

“When we get people up to sing sometimes they try to embellish on the melody that is actually there, but Harry kept it as per the recording and he did a great job.

“All to him I reckon, it sounded great and it looked mighty.”

Styles told Perth fans: “I can feel the Aussie coursing through my veins.

“You don’t hear that song very much but when you get here, it’s like catnip.”

Braithwaite famously covered the Rickie Lee Jones song in 1990 on his album Rise and it became an instant classic.

The song featured singer Margaret Urlich, who sadly died last August aged 57 after a two-year battle with cancer, on vocals.

An instant hit when it was released, The Horses has since become anthemic among millennials.

Braithwaite will perform at Taronga Zoo and Rock at the Races in Gosford, NSW, next month.

Styles’ Love on Tour concert series continues its juggernaut across the country with two upcoming Gold Coast shows and three concerts in Sydney.
